Tracing its lineage to 1946, Electronic Attack Squadron 131 (VAQ-131) is the U.S. Navy’s oldest active electronic attack squadron. Originally established as Reserve Patrol Squadron 931, the unit evolved through several missions and aircraft before becoming Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 131 in 1968. In 1971, the Lancers became only the second Navy squadron to transition to the EA-6B Prowler, beginning more than four decades of service as a premier naval electronic warfare unit.

The Lancers have a distinguished combat record spanning multiple decades and theaters. They supported operations during the Iran hostage crisis, Lebanon, Grenada, Desert Storm, Somalia, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, and Inherent Resolve. During Operation Desert Storm, VAQ-131 flew 228 combat sorties and employed AGM-88 HARM missiles against enemy air-defense threats. In 2005, the squadron also participated in Operation Unified Assistance, providing humanitarian relief following the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami.

In 2014–2015, the Lancers completed their transition from the EA-6B Prowler to the EA-18G Growler, bringing the squadron into the Navy’s next generation of airborne electronic attack. Since becoming an expeditionary squadron in 2019, VAQ-131 has deployed its Growlers worldwide, integrating with U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, and allied forces.

MISSION

VAQ-131’s mission is to conduct electronic warfare on time and on target. Flying the EA-18G Growler, the Lancers provide airborne electronic attack, suppression of enemy air defenses, and electromagnetic-spectrum effects that enable friendly forces to operate in contested environments. Their Growlers can detect, identify, disrupt, and suppress hostile radar and communications systems while supporting strike and carrier forces in combat.

Today, the Lancers remain an expeditionary electronic-attack force capable of deploying worldwide in support of U.S. Navy strike groups, Marine aviation units, Air Force expeditionary wings, and allied and coalition forces. Their enduring mission reflects the squadron’s legacy: protect the force, dominate the electromagnetic spectrum, and ensure the freedom to fight and win.
