Based at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the 128th Air Refueling Wing is one of the state’s premier Air National Guard organizations and has a long tradition of providing combat-ready airpower to the nation. The wing’s lineage traces back through the evolution of Wisconsin Air National Guard aviation units, with the organization becoming a dedicated air-refueling force during the postwar era. Over the decades, the 128th has operated multiple generations of tanker aircraft and has supported American military operations around the world. Its Airmen have answered the call during major national and international crises, including Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Kosovo operations, and post-9/11 operations in the Middle East.

The 128th has continued that tradition into the modern era, deploying Airmen and aircraft in support of operations including Inherent Resolve and Freedom’s Sentinel, as well as missions throughout the Pacific and other theaters. The wing has also contributed to major multinational exercises, including Air Defender 2023, helping demonstrate the Air National Guard’s ability to rapidly project and sustain airpower across the globe.

MISSION

The primary mission of the 128th Air Refueling Wing is aerial refueling—providing the fuel necessary to extend the range, endurance, and combat effectiveness of U.S. and allied aircraft. Operating the KC-135R Stratotanker, the wing enables fighters, bombers, transports, special operations aircraft, and other airpower to remain airborne longer and reach farther, making the 128th a critical component of America’s global airpower. The wing also maintains the readiness to conduct airlift and other contingency missions in support of national objectives.

As a Wisconsin Air National Guard unit, the 128th maintains a dual mission. Under federal authority, its Airmen provide operationally ready combat forces for worldwide deployment. Under state authority, the wing can support Wisconsin during emergencies, including disaster relief, search and rescue, and defense support to civil authorities.

Today, the 128th Air Refueling Wing continues its tradition of global reach, combat readiness, and service to both state and nation. Its mission is summed up by the wing’s current vision: “Unstoppable Airpower.”
