The 142nd Military Police Brigade was created by the Alabama Army National Guard in 2020 to bring Alabama’s military police forces together under a single brigade command. The unit was officially unveiled at a ceremony at Fort McClellan, Alabama, on June 7, 2020, and was fully activated later that summer. At activation, the brigade was projected to include approximately 1,000 Soldiers.

The purpose behind creating the brigade was to provide Alabama with a unified military-police command capable of coordinating its MP forces for both domestic and overseas missions. Rather than representing a completely new military-police capability, the 142nd brought together existing Alabama Guard MP organizations—including the 203rd Military Police Battalion and 231st Military Police Battalion—under one command structure.

The brigade’s Soldiers have continued to train for a wide range of missions, including law enforcement, security operations, force protection, and combat-support tasks. Its training emphasizes maintaining the specialized skills required of military police while ensuring that the different units within the brigade can operate together as a larger organization.

Mission

The Alabama National Guard describes the brigade’s mission as providing “the nation’s best security and law enforcement Soldiers.” The 142nd is specifically organized and trained to:

  • Secure and police military installations, both in the United States and overseas.
  • Conduct military-police operations in deployed environments.
  • Train and augment foreign and U.S. law-enforcement organizations.
  • Provide assistance to civilian law-enforcement agencies when they are overwhelmed by crisis or natural disaster.
  • Provide security and protection for personnel, facilities, and critical assets.

That makes the 142nd somewhat unique within the Alabama Guard. It is not simply a conventional law-enforcement organization; it has to be prepared to transition between domestic support, installation security, and overseas combat-support missions depending on what the state or nation requires.

The brigade’s identity

The 142nd’s insignia and identity are built around the traditional Military Police Corps motto:

“Assist, Protect, Defend.”

When the brigade was formed, its Soldiers deliberately incorporated those three concepts into the design of the new shoulder insignia. The diagonal division represents the MP Corps’ willingness to assist during both wartime and peacetime. The shield represents the responsibility to protect, while the helmet and sword symbolize the willingness to defend.

The brigade’s motto is also commonly associated with “Beati Pacifici” — “Blessed are the Peacemakers.”
